Exciting New Theater Shows for the First Quarter 2014

We’ve already written about Wicked and Rak of Aegis last December, but for those looking for more options, check out our list of exciting new theater shows for the first quarter of 2014 below.

1. Wait Until Dark (Repertory Philippines)

Wait Until Dark

Wait Until Dark is a thriller about blind housewife Susy Hendrix who must fight for her life against a gang of ruthless criminals, led by the violent, psychotic Roat. The play was first performed in 1966 in Broadway, and was subsequently turned into a film in 1967, starring Audrey Hepburn (who was nominated for an Academy Award).

Wait Until Dark will run from January 17 to February 9, 2014 (with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 pm).  All performances are at Onstage, 2/F, Greenbelt 1, Paseo de Roxas cor. Legazpi St., Makati City. You can purchase tickets here.

2. Red (The Necessary Theater)

Red (play)

Cited by Inquirer Theater Editor Gibbs Cadiz as the Best Play of 2013 (Full-length/Non-Filipino Material), Red fictionalizes the story of abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko at the time he was commissioned to paint a series of murals for the Seagram Building in Park Avenue. (He subsequently decided to keep the paintings and return the payment. He later on committed suicide.) The play created the character of newly-hired assistant Ken with whom Rothko discusses art, art appreciation and commercialism. The New York Times describes the play as “a portrait of an angry and brilliant mind that asks you to feel the shape and texture of thoughts”.

Red will run from January 31 to 9 February 2014 at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. You can purchase tickets here.

3. August: Osage County (Repertory Philippines)

August Osage County

August: Osage County is a dark comedy which tells the story of the Weston family whose patriarch, Beverly, has gone missing. His body is found subsequently in a lake, in what appears to be a suicide. The play then follows the Weston family as they cope with this loss and with each other.

The play was the recipient of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and has been adapted for film in 2013 starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.

August: Osage County will run from February 21 – March 16, 2014 (with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 pm).  All performances are at Onstage, 2/F, Greenbelt 1, Paseo de Roxas cor. Legazpi St., Makati City. You can purchase tickets here.
